The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a public service program under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. It was launched in Gandhiji’s centenary year, 1969, aimed at developing student personality through community service. The NSS is a voluntary association of young people in colleges, universities, and at the +2 level working for a campus-community linkage.

Objectives:The primary objective of NSS is to enable students to understand the community in which they work, understand themselves in relation to their community, identify the needs and problems of the community, involve them in problem-solving, develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility and utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems.

Activities

Community Service: NSS volunteers engage in various community service activities such as health camps, blood donation drives, tree plantation, cleanliness drives under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and more.

Education and Literacy: Initiatives include adult education programs, teaching underprivileged children, and conducting awareness drives on health, sanitation, and environmental conservation.

Disaster Management: Volunteers are trained to assist in disaster management and relief operations during natural calamities like floods, earthquakes and cyclones.

Cultural Programs: Organizing cultural events to promote traditional arts and cultural heritage among the youth and the community.

National Integration Camps: These camps bring together NSS volunteers from different regions, fostering unity and understanding among diverse cultures.

Enrollment and Participation

Enrollment in NSS is voluntary and open to all students in the institution. Students can join NSS by filling out a registration form available at the NSS office on campus. Participation in NSS activities is recognized by the institution and often contributes to the holistic development of the student, enhancing their resume and employability.
